Luthier Tools & Equipment

Here’s a selection of the most commonly used tools, equipment, and supplies that we use in both our guitar repair workshop and during our courses. We’ve given everything a thorough testing so that we’re happy to recommend them.

String Height Gauge

This is a great multipurpose tool. It’s perfect for measuring string action height, pickup height, and includes recommended setup specs. It also works as a fret rocker, wrench, and screw driver.

Gauged Nut Files

These files are great for lowering nut slots or making bone nuts from blanks. I’ve been using the same set for close to 10 years and they still work great. They can be bought individually but it’s best to have a full set.

Fret Rubber

This is a very clean and effective way to polish frets. The 1000 grit rubber is abrasive enough to remove oxidation, grime, and corrosion whilst still gentle enough to not affect fret height. Great alternative to steel wool.

Soldering Station

A quality soldering station is essential to carrying out good guitar wiring work. This unit comes with all the tools needed to get started, including spare tips, solder, extraction pump, and helping hand holders.

Lemon Oil

Using Lemon Oil is a great way to look after rosewood and ebony guitar necks. Just a few drops can help remove grease, dirt, and condition the fretboard to extend it’s life. Just remember not to use it on maple or finished boards.

Feeler Gauge

These are great for measuring truss rod relief. They can be easily disassembled for individual use. Another great use is as height guides for nut slot lowering, they can work as a guard and stop the file running too deep.

I’ve personally tried and tested all of these items and will be adding more soon. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This is at no additional expense to you. I’ve bought many tools over the years that didn’t stand up to workshop use so hopefully this will save some time and money for all of you.
